A 14-year-old girl was tragically mauled to death by a lioness near the southern border of Nairobi National Park in a harrowing case of human-wildlife conflict, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed.
The deadly attack occurred on a ranch adjacent to the protected park. According to initial reports, the young girl was within the vicinity of the property when the lioness attacked. While the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, authorities have confirmed that investigations are underway, with further details to be released following a full assessment.
In a separate and equally devastating incident, a 54-year-old man was fatally attacked by an elephant in Nyeri County. KWS has acknowledged both fatalities and expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. The agency extended its condolences to the families affected and assured the public that rapid response teams have been deployed in both areas to manage the situation and prevent further casualties.

These incidents highlight the growing tension between human communities and wildlife in Kenya, particularly in areas bordering conservation zones. Residents near Nairobi National Park and other protected areas frequently face the threat of wildlife encroachment, especially during times when animals migrate beyond park boundaries in search of food or water.
Conservationists and local leaders continue to call for urgent action to curb the rise in human-wildlife conflict. Proposed solutions include the construction of more effective perimeter fencing, the development of early warning systems to alert communities, and educational programs aimed at improving coexistence between humans and wildlife.
KWS reiterated its commitment to collaborating with local communities, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders to implement enhanced safety measures and long-term conflict mitigation strategies.
