Telegram Chief Pavel Durov Detained in Paris Over Alleged Platform Misuse

Pavel Durov, the CEO of Telegram, was detained at Paris-Le Bourget Airport on Saturday after arriving from Azerbaijan. The 39-year-old, who holds dual citizenship in France and Russia, was taken into custody by French customs officials.

The detainment reportedly stems from an arrest warrant issued in France, which accuses Durov's platform of being used for illegal activities such as money laundering, drug trafficking, and crimes against minors, including online sexual exploitation.

French prosecutors have declined to comment on the arrest, citing ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, Telegram defended Durov, stating, “He has nothing to hide,” and emphasized the platform’s compliance with EU laws, including the Digital Services Act.

Telegram was founded by Durov and his brother after mass pro-democracy protests in Russia, where it quickly became a tool for secure communication in an increasingly repressive environment. The platform, known for its pro-privacy stance, has faced scrutiny from Western governments for its content moderation practices.

The French authorities are expected to decide whether Durov will remain in custody, with a potential appearance before a judge later Sunday. Russian officials have expressed outrage over the arrest, accusing the West of double standards on freedom of speech.
