Tennessee preschool teacher charged with bringing gun to school, threatening colleague

Sheneca Cowart is accused of threatening another teacher with a firearm, police say.

A Nashville preschool teacher, Sheneca Cowart, is facing charges after allegedly bringing a gun to school and threatening a colleague, as reported by the police.

Cowart, aged 29, has been charged with assault, threat of mass violence, and two counts of carrying a weapon onto school property, according to Nashville police. The incident took place at The Academy of McCrory Lane, located on Newsome Station Road. Witnesses reported that Cowart made threats of retrieving a firearm and directed threats toward another teacher and the school following an altercation, as per police statements.

Rapid School Safety Team Officers apprehended Cowart on Thursday, recovering a firearm from her purse and another firearm from the driver’s side door of her vehicle.

She is currently being held in custody with a bond set at $37,000, as confirmed by police.

Cowart's arrest occurred shortly after Republican lawmakers in Tennessee moved forward with a proposal allowing certain teachers to carry handguns in public schools. Senate Bill 1325 was passed by the Republican-controlled Senate, permitting teachers or faculty members meeting specific criteria to possess and carry handguns or firearms on school premises.

Under the bill, individuals must hold a valid handgun carry permit, obtain written authorization from the school principal and local law enforcement, and complete 40 hours of handgun training. Additionally, they must not be legally prohibited from owning or carrying a handgun based on Tennessee or federal laws, as determined by a background check.
