Texas high school shooting leaves 18-year-old student dead, shot multiple times; suspect in custody

Authorities arrived at the scene of Bowie High School on 2:50 p.m. on Wednesday.

An 18-year-old student is dead after sustaining five to six gunshot wounds from another student outside Bowie High School in Texas.


During a press conference, Arlington Police Chief Al Jones and Arlington ISD Superintendent Dr. Matt Smith disclosed that the incident occurred at the local public school around 2:50 p.m. on Wednesday near a portable building outside. The school immediately went into lockdown as the shooting took place just before students were set to be dismissed for the day.

Upon arrival at the scene, School Resource Officers found the 18-year-old male student critically injured and unresponsive, having suffered apparent gunshot wounds. Despite swift medical attention and transportation to a nearby hospital, the student tragically succumbed to his injuries.


Law enforcement officers apprehended the 17-year-old suspected shooter as he attempted to flee the school grounds. He was arrested near the campus and will face murder charges once booked into Arlington City Jail, as per police statements.


School Resource Officers arrived at the school to find the 18-year-old student shot.

Families were directed to reunite with their children at a district facility several miles away from the campus, following the harrowing incident. Arlington police pledged to provide further updates as information becomes available.

Chief Jones emphasized the community's intolerance for such violence, stating, "Our hearts are with the entire Bowie High School community tonight. We, as a community, cannot tolerate this kind of violence. Not in our neighborhoods and not in our schools. Violence is never the right answer. We will continue to work in lockstep with our partners at Arlington ISD to ensure our schools are safe spaces where students can learn."


Dallas ISD also extended their condolences to Bowie High School and the Arlington ISD community, expressing sympathy during this challenging period.
