Touching act after 23yo allegedly killed by ex

The family and friends of Hannah McGuire, a young woman allegedly murdered by her ex-boyfriend, gathered outside her parents' pub to pay tribute to her. Her body was discovered inside a burnt-out car in Scarsdale, southwest of Ballarat, a few days after she was reported missing at the age of 23.

Lachie Young, her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend, has been charged with her murder.

The National Hotel in Clunes, where Ms. McGuire's parents own the establishment and where she once worked, has become a site of remembrance. Floral tributes adorned with heartfelt messages from friends offer solace and support to her grieving family.

One card left at the pub reads, “Know that we are here for you to reach out during this difficult time on the devastating loss of Hannah.” Another message simply says, “Thinking of you in this sad time.”

According to police statements in court on Tuesday, Mr. Young allegedly killed Ms. McGuire before driving to State Forest Rd in Scarsdale and setting the car ablaze. The authorities also claimed that she died inside Mr. Young’s home in Sebastopol, located on Ballarat’s southern fringe.

In court, Mr. Young’s lawyer mentioned that the 21-year-old was experiencing declining mental health. He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court for committal on September 19.

Ms. McGuire’s tragic death marks the third instance of a woman allegedly murdered by a man in Ballarat within a short span of two months. Rebecca Young, a mother-of-five, was allegedly killed in a suspected murder-suicide on February 16. On February 4, Samantha Murphy, aged 51, disappeared during a morning jog, and Patrick Orren Stephenson was charged with her murder on March 7, although her body has not been found.
