Tourist clawed by bear on Romanian road after stopping for photo

On a Romanian highway, a Scottish tourist had a startling encounter with a bear that climbed into her car window on Monday, leaving her with claw marks on her arm. Despite the unexpected attack, the 72-year-old managed to capture a photo of the not-so-friendly furball before it lashed out.

The incident occurred as the woman and her friend were driving along the winding Transfăgărășan Highway in the Carpathian Mountains. They spotted a pair of brown bears moving alongside the road and decided to roll down the window to snap a picture of the adorable creatures. However, one of the bears stood up on its hind legs, pushed its snout through the window, and swiped at the woman.

Reflecting on the incident from her hospital bed, the woman shared, “I just wanted to take a picture of him,” mentioning that her arm was sore from the bear's attack. Fortunately, her friend reacted quickly and drove away before the bear could cause further harm.

Following the incident, the tourist was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, as reported by the Mirror. Romania has faced a series of alarming bear-human encounters in recent years, sparking discussions and concerns across the country.

With Romania hosting up to 8,000 brown bears, second only to Russia in Europe, such incidents have become a pressing issue. Politico noted that between 2016 and 2021, there were 154 bear attacks on humans, resulting in 14 fatalities. The severity of these encounters has prompted discussions about increasing hunting quotas as a potential solution to manage the bear population.
