Tragedy as West Point cadet, 21, is found dead in a river two days after he went missing while he partied with friends at a bar during spring break weekend

Havin Morris, 21, was found dead in The New River by a team of police divers in Fort Lauderdale on Monday

A 21-year-old West Point cadet has tragically been found dead in a river after disappearing during a spring break weekend in Florida, officials have reported.

Havin Morris had been enjoying time at an Irish bar in Fort Lauderdale with three friends who later lost sight of him, just two days before his body was discovered.

The cadet's friends last saw him at Dicey Riley's Irish Pub near the New River, around 1 am early Sunday morning.

Subsequently, a police dive team recovered the young cadet's body on Monday from the river near the spot where he was last seen. Local authorities believe that the "bright" young man likely drowned in the New River, and no foul play is suspected.

"The information gathered throughout our investigation led FLPD's Dive Team to search the New River near the area where he was last seen," police stated. "Divers located his body on Monday night. At this time, his death appears to be an accidental drowning, and no foul play is suspected."

His parents were later informed by the friends that they could not locate Morris' the following day. They then filed a missing's persons report describing Morris' lack of correspondence as 'abnormal'

Morris' parents were notified of their son's disappearance after his friends were unable to reach him or locate him at the hotel. The parents received a text from Morris at 11 pm the night before, but subsequent attempts to contact him went unanswered and went straight to voicemail the next day.

Describing the lack of communication as "abnormal behavior" for the cadet, Morris's father, Hollis, expressed concern.

Touching tributes to the cadet have been shared by West Point staff, who described him as 'bright and resilient'

Since his passing, heartfelt tributes have poured in for the cadet from West Point staff, who praised his brightness and resilience. Maj. Rebecca A. Gogue, Morris's tactical officer, described him as a "bright, resilient young man with a determination to succeed."

West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Steve Gilland also expressed condolences, stating, "Cadet Morris was a valued member of the Corps of Cadets, committed to serving his country as an Army Officer."

The US Army has assigned an assistance officer to Morris's family to provide support during this challenging time. Additionally, West Point has mentioned that the Army's Criminal Investigation Command is collaborating with Fort Lauderdale police in the investigation into Morris's death.

This tragic incident follows a recent episode where seven individuals, including six West Point cadets, were found to have overdosed on fentanyl-laced cocaine in Fort Lauderdale.
