Tragic Incident at Nnamdi Azikiwe University: Graduate Dies in Prank Gone Wrong
A fresh graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Ifunanya Miracle, also known as Bliss, has tragically died while attempting to escape what she believed to be a robbery on the university premises in Awka, Anambra State. The incident involved a student prankster and occurred on June 9, 2024.
Ifunanya, a recent graduate from the Department of Quantity Surveying, was in a tricycle with a friend, Peace, a student in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, when they encountered a "robber" in the vehicle. In an attempt to escape, they both jumped out of the moving tricycle. Ifunanya hit her head on the pavement and succumbed to her injuries. Peace sustained injuries and was rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Ifunanya had been running a Point-of-Sale (POS) business on the school premises while studying and continued it post-graduation. On the day of the incident, she had just closed her business for the day and boarded the tricycle with Peace. A fellow passenger in the tricycle, allegedly attempting to rob them, demanded their valuables. In a panic, the two students jumped out of the vehicle.
A student, who preferred to remain anonymous, described the events leading up to the tragedy, stating, “Miracle just graduated from the university and runs a PoS operation in the school. The incident happened around 7 pm on June 9, 2024. She usually stored her business equipment under the staircase in our compound. After dropping her stuff that evening, we suddenly heard she was dead."
According to reports, the man who attempted to rob them later claimed it was a prank and has since reported himself to the police. This has raised suspicions among the students, with many believing he may have changed his story upon realizing the gravity of the situation.
Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, the spokesperson for the university, confirmed the case, noting that the prankster, a final-year student, would face disciplinary measures after Ifunanya's burial. “The university is fully aware of the incident. It was not a robbery but a very expensive prank. The families of the victims and the final-year student who pranked them have met with us, and it was established that it was a prank. The family of the concerned student will take responsibility for the funeral of the deceased and the hospital bills of the other student,” he stated.
Dr. Ojukwu further warned students against engaging in pranks that could lead to fatal consequences, emphasizing that such actions would be met with severe disciplinary measures. Friends and fellow students have taken to social media to mourn the loss of Ifunanya, expressing their grief and condolences.
