Truong My Lan: Vietnamese billionaire sentenced to death for $44bn fraud

Truong My Lan, a prominent Vietnamese property tycoon, has been sentenced to death for her involvement in a multi-billion-dollar fraud case.

Lan, the chair of real estate company Van Thinh Phat (VTP), was convicted of embezzlement, bribery, and violations of banking regulations following a trial in Ho Chi Minh City.

The case revolved around allegations that Lan orchestrated a scheme amounting to $12.5 billion, which accounted for nearly 3% of Vietnam's GDP in 2022. She was accused of obtaining $44 billion in loans from the Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), with prosecutors estimating that $27 billion might never be recovered.

The trial, which began on 5 March, attracted significant attention and scrutiny, given Lan's stature in Vietnam's business community. VTP, under her leadership, was a major player in real estate, managing luxury properties such as homes, offices, hotels, and shopping centers.

Lan's arrest in October 2022 marked a pivotal moment in Vietnam's anti-corruption efforts, symbolized by the "blazing furnace" campaign targeting high-profile individuals engaged in illicit activities. Despite the verdict, Lan's family intends to appeal the decision.

The fallout from this case has had ripple effects on Vietnam's economy, causing a $40 billion drop in stock market value in 2022 and raising concerns among foreign investors about the country's business environment.

The crackdown on corruption has also led to the resignation or prosecution of numerous business leaders and government officials, including Vo Van Thuong, the former president.

Although Vietnamese authorities, led by leader Nguyen Phu Trong, have pledged to combat corruption, challenges remain in translating these promises into concrete actions that restore public trust and investor confidence in the country's governance and business landscape.
