Two ASPs dismissed over $3000 extortion in Rivers

Olatunji Disu, Commissioner of Police, Rivers state

The Rivers State Police Command has announced the dismissal of Inspector Michael Odey, who was found involved in an act of extortion. Additionally, two other operatives implicated in the incident have been queried and recommended for dismissal following standard procedures.

Reportedly, the three officers, including two Assistant Superintendents of Police, were apprehended and detained on allegations of kidnapping and extorting $3000 (approximately N4.2m) from two unidentified travelers in December 2023.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command and a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the dismissal of Inspector Odey and the recommendation for the dismissal of the two ASPs in a statement released in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Iringe-Koko explained that Inspector Odey's dismissal followed the conclusion of an orderly room trial conducted by the command. As for the ASPs, their dismissal recommendation has been forwarded to the office of the Inspector General of Police to ensure a fair and just trial.

In her statement, Iringe-Koko stated, "The Rivers State Police Command is providing an update on an ongoing investigation into an extortion incident involving three police officers. As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability, we are disclosing the following information: After a thorough investigation, two officers have been officially queried and recommended for dismissal according to established procedures. This recommendation has been promptly sent to the Force Secretary for necessary action."

She further mentioned that the findings had been reviewed by AIG Alifa Omata, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16, Yenagoa, who upheld the recommendation for dismissal from the Force, effective February 7, 2024.

"All three officers remain in custody as investigations continue into two additional cases of a similar nature," Iringe-Koko added. "Updates on these investigations will be provided in due course. The disciplinary process for Assistant Superintendents of Police Doubara Edonyabo and Talent Mungo involves review by the Inspector General of Police and the Police Service Commission, ensuring a fair and just resolution."
