Utah Nurse Accused of Murder in Poisoning of Friend and Killing Her for Life Insurance Payout

A Utah nurse has been accused of murder after allegedly convincing her friend she was dying of cancer and then fatally poisoning her to obtain a life insurance payout. Meggan Randall Sundwall, 47, was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice and aggravated murder in connection with the death of Kacee Lyn Terry, 38, according to Utah County Jail records.
Over a five-year period, Sundwall allegedly persuaded Terry that she was suffering from cancer, despite her being in good health. Court documents indicate that Sundwall attempted to convince her friend to take a fatal dose of insulin to "end her suffering" after believing that Terry was the beneficiary of a rumored $1.5 million life insurance policy.
Investigators discovered extensive digital evidence supporting this theory, including over 28,000 messages exchanged between the two. These messages allegedly contained discussions of various ways Terry could die, as well as Sundwall’s offers to "help" facilitate her death. Additionally, the records suggest Sundwall and her husband were experiencing financial difficulties following her job loss.
Authorities allege that Sundwall, a licensed registered nurse, knowingly administered insulin to a non-diabetic patient, fully aware that it would be fatal. On August 12, Terry’s uncle found her unconscious and struggling to breathe in her bedroom, with Sundwall present. Sundwall reportedly claimed that Terry had a "do not resuscitate" medical order and did not want to be hospitalized. However, medical staff were unable to locate such an order, and it was determined that Sundwall had not been granted power of attorney.
Paramedics arriving at the scene discovered a diabetic needle, despite Terry not being diabetic. She was transported to the hospital and placed in the intensive care unit. During her hospitalization, Terry’s sister informed officers that Terry had been battling terminal cancer for four to five years but had recently shown signs of improvement. However, an autopsy later confirmed that Terry had no cancer or any significant health issues.
Terry was declared brain dead on August 15. The Office of the Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be an overdose of promethazine, probable exogenous insulin, and other drugs.
Following her passing, loved ones paid tribute to Terry in an obituary, describing her as someone whose greatest wish was to become a mother. “Kacee's wish in life more than anything was to be a mom; she loved babysitting and couldn't wait to have her own family,” the obituary read. “Although Kacee was never able to have children of her own, she filled the role of mom to many kids.” The obituary further expressed that while her passing was difficult to understand, her family found comfort in believing she was now at peace.
Sundwall is currently being held by the Utah County Sheriff's Office without bail as the investigation continues.
