Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas Appointed Sole Administrator of Rivers State
President Bola Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the sole administrator of Rivers State following the declaration of a state of emergency. This decision comes after the suspension of the governor, deputy governor, and members of the State House of Assembly amid escalating political tensions.
Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Ibas is a distinguished Nigerian naval officer and diplomat. He served as the 22nd Chief of Naval Staff from July 2015 until his retirement in January 2021. In recognition of his service, he was appointed as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ghana in 2021.
Ibas began his education at Nko Primary School before completing his primary studies at Big Qua Primary School, Calabar, in 1971. He attended Hope Waddell Training Institute from 1972 to 1976 and the School of Basic Studies, Ogoja, between 1977 and 1979. His naval career commenced at the Nigerian Defence Academy on June 20, 1979, as part of the 26th Regular Course, leading to his commission as a sub-lieutenant on January 1, 1983.
He pursued advanced military education in various institutions, including the Indian Navy, U.S. Marine Corps University, and the National Defence College in Pakistan, where he earned a master’s degree in defense and strategic studies from Quaid-i-Azam University.
Throughout his career, Ibas held key positions in the Nigerian Navy, including Executive Officer on multiple naval ships, Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Underwater Warfare School, Commander of the Forward Operating Base Ibaka, and Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji. His extensive military experience and leadership credentials position him to oversee the affairs of Rivers State during this emergency period.
