Video: Man Buried Alive For 4 Days Saved After Cops Hear His Muffled Cries

A 62-year-old man, buried alive for four days, was rescued after police heard his muffled cries for help coming from underground.

Officers in Moldova made the discovery while investigating the death of a 74-year-old woman, found dead in her home by a relative on Monday. The police arrested a suspect in her death and, while searching his home in the same village, heard cries for help nearby.

They began digging and found the entrance to a makeshift grave where an 18-year-old man had buried the elderly victim. Police footage shows the man being pulled out, conscious but with a neck wound.

Forensic specialists were called to a residence in Ustia, northwest Moldova, after the elderly woman was found dead. They determined she died after being physically attacked and severely wounded. Officers quickly identified an 18-year-old relative of the deceased as a suspect in her murder. Both the victim and the teen were not named in local media.

The suspect, found in his own home in a state of intoxication, gave 'confusing' and 'inconsistent' statements during police questioning. As officers searched his home, they heard cries for help from under the ground near the house. They discovered a man in his sixties, buried in a makeshift grave covered with soil.

The rescued man told police he and the teenager had been drinking together on Saturday when they started to argue. The suspect then allegedly attacked him with a knife before locking him in the makeshift basement, burying him alive, and covering the entrance with soil. Officers believe the teenager murdered the elderly woman either on Sunday night or early Monday.

The suspect has been remanded into custody as police and prosecutors investigate him for murder and attempted murder. He faces up to life in prison if found guilty. The rescued man is receiving treatment in the hospital.

One local described the deceased victim as "a very decent woman, no one ever had any problems with her."
