WATCH: Tyre of United Airlines comes out mid-air; crushes cars parked below
A United Airlines flight bound for Japan from San Francisco encountered a mishap shortly after takeoff when a tyre detached from the aircraft, plummeting onto parked cars below and causing damage.
The Boeing 777-200, carrying 249 passengers and headed to Osaka, was rerouted to Los Angeles International Airport as a precautionary measure.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported upon landing.
Video footage captured the tyre falling from the plane, leading to damage to multiple vehicles. United Airlines clarified that the 777-200 aircraft, equipped with six tyres on each main landing gear, is engineered to safely land even with missing or damaged tyres.
The airline assured passengers that a replacement aircraft would be arranged to continue their journey to Osaka.
United Airlines also pledged to collaborate with the owners of the damaged vehicles to address their needs.
Following the incident, the Boeing 777 executed a safe landing and came to a stop roughly two-thirds down the runway before being towed away.
The Federal Aviation Administration will conduct further investigations into the incident.
