Woman Dies After Stolen SUV Crashes into U.S. Attorney's Office in D.C.

Assistant Police Chief Darnel Robinson provides an update on the stolen vehicle in Washington, D.C., on Monday

A woman lost her life when an SUV she was in was stolen from MedStar Washington Hospital Center and subsequently crashed into the U.S. attorney's office building in downtown Washington, D.C., police reported on Monday.

Assistant Washington Police Chief Darnel Robinson described the incident as a "tragedy" during a media briefing. The victim's identity has not yet been released. According to police, the SUV was taken around 1:11 p.m. Monday by another woman while the victim was inside.

A post on X indicated that the victim was reported as an “elderly parent” inside the vehicle. The stolen SUV collided with the building at the intersection of 6th and D streets NW.

A nearby patrol officer witnessed the crash through a rearview mirror, saw the driver attempt to flee, and subsequently detained her for questioning, Robinson stated. The identity of the driver has not been disclosed.

Investigators are working to determine if the driver was aware of the victim's presence in the SUV and whether the vehicle was running at the time it was stolen. Robinson mentioned that the police will consult with the U.S. attorney's office to decide on potential charges.

Carjackings in Washington, D.C., more than doubled last year, though this year they have decreased by 33% compared to the same period last year, according to police data reported by NBC Washington.
