Celia Tello, 68, assumed she had a bone was caught in her throat - but it was a nail hidden inside the rinds. She was immediately rushed to a hospital's emergency room after experiencing swelling in her neck and coughing up blood. Tello underwent surgery to remove the object, which doctors said turned out to be a metallic nail piercing one of her cartid arteries, according to ABS-CBN News. Cartoid arteries are a "vital part of your circulatory system" because they supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain, face, and neck, according to Cleveland Clinic. A South American woman had to be rushed to the hospital after discovering a foreign object in her bag of pork rinds.

Celia Tello, a 68-year-old resident of Peru, was enjoying her snack in February when she suddenly felt something sharp hit her throat.

Soon after, Tello fell ill and began vomiting blood, prompting her to seek emergency medical attention. Doctors at the hospital then made a shocking discovery – a nail was piercing one of her carotid arteries, crucial for supplying oxygen and blood to the brain.

Initially mistaking the object for a bone, Tello was surprised to learn it was actually a nail. “It never crossed my mind I had this nail or piece of wire.”

Surgeon Diego Cuipal elaborated that a delicate procedure was performed to safely extract the nail from her body. There was a risk of dislodging a clot that could have reached her brain, but the surgery was successful.

“We were able to isolate the affected artery and we repaired it by sectioning it and we joined a healthy artery with another healthy artery,” Cuipal explained in Spanish.

X-ray images of Tello's condition clearly showed the nail embedded in her throat. Despite the ordeal, Tello has since recovered, albeit with a visible scar on her neck.

Although such incidents are rare, they are not unheard of. In 2018, a Burger King customer discovered a fingernail in his burger, which he accidentally ingested. Similarly, a Chipotle customer in Massachusetts reported biting into a nail while eating a burrito, resulting in a chipped tooth.
