Woman accused of throwing her disabled son to his death in a crocodile-infested canal
A woman in southern India has been arrested for allegedly throwing her disabled six-year-old son into a canal filled with crocodiles following an argument with her husband, according to police reports.
The dismembered body of the boy, who suffered from hearing and speech impairments, was recovered from a canal in Karnataka state's Uttara Kannada district on Sunday.
Savitri, 32, accused her husband Ravi Kumar, 36, of pressuring her to throw their child to his death, as per a local police officer speaking to the Hindustan Times. Mr Kumar was also apprehended by authorities.
She claimed that her husband regarded their son as a burden, leading to frequent disputes between them.
"Following an escalated argument over the same issue on Saturday night, Savitri allegedly tossed her son into a waste canal connected to the crocodile-infested Kali river around 9 pm," stated police inspector Krishna Barakeri to the paper.
Savitri accused her husband of subjecting her to mental torture and instructing her to dispose of their child. "My husband is to blame. He constantly said let the son die since all he does is eat. I'd plead to let him be. If my husband continues saying that, how much suffering can my son endure? Where can I go to share my pain," she reportedly disclosed to police.
Upon neighbors raising concerns, divers were dispatched by the police to locate the boy. However, due to darkness, the search had to be postponed until the next day.
The boy's body was found in a crocodile's grasp and was retrieved following the capture of the crocodile, authorities mentioned. The body exhibited severe injuries, bite marks, and a missing right arm.
The woman, employed as a house help, and her husband, a mason, were subsequently arrested on charges of murder, police confirmed.
