Young Boy Seeks Justice After Uncle Amputates His Hands Over Alleged Phone Theft

Adamu Muhammad

A 12-year-old boy, Adamu Muhammad, from Sambo Daji village in Tumu, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, is seeking justice after his uncle, Bappan Yahaya Malam Buba, 45, amputated his hands, accusing him of stealing a mobile phone.

Buba allegedly tied Adamu up and chopped off his hands in a fit of anger over the missing phone, worth N50,000.

"I am saddened by the loss of my hands because I don’t know how I’ll be able to take care of myself," Adamu lamented. "I am asking the government and the community to help me so that I can take care of my little needs."

On the day of the incident, Buba tied Adamu at noon, keeping him restrained until after the Friday prayer at 2:30 PM. He then took Adamu to the police station in Tumu town, but they refused to take him in. Buba subsequently took him to the hospital for treatment.

The next day, officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Tumu town arrested Buba and his son, detaining them and demanding N30,000 to commence further treatment on Adamu.

Buba, admitting to the brutal act, expressed regret: "I regret what happened because even my son, Haifa, begged me to untie Adamu. I did it because I was angry, and now I see what anger has caused me."

Alhaji Mustapha Aliyu Ibrahim, the representative of Tumu and Pindiga community, stated that efforts are being made to assist Adamu. "If he gets better, we will see how we can help him," he said.

Adamu's father, Malam Muhammad Sambo Daji, condemned his younger brother's actions and called for justice for his son.

Aliyu Alola Alfindi, the Public Relations Officer of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), described the incident as a severe violation of human rights.

NSCDC commander Muhammad Bello Mu’azu also condemned Buba’s actions, stating that such brutality should not be condoned.
