Young brother and sister dead, several hurt when vehicle crashes into Michigan birthday party
Tragedy struck at a young child's birthday party on Saturday when a vehicle, allegedly driven by a suspected drunken driver, crashed into the gathering at a boat club in Michigan, according to Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough.
The devastating incident claimed the lives of an 8-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother at the Swan Creek Boat Club in Berlin Township, located approximately 30 miles south of Detroit. Sheriff Goodnough described the scene as chaotic, with first responders encountering a high level of emotions from both those directly involved and witnesses.
Nine individuals, including three children and six adults, sustained severe injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals via helicopters or ambulances. Additional individuals received first aid at the scene, while some were driven to hospitals by private vehicles.
The driver, identified only as a 66-year-old woman, was taken into custody on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death. Sheriff Goodnough stated that she was cooperating with authorities and could face further charges pending the ongoing investigation.
Authorities were informed that the woman may have been at a nearby tavern before the tragic incident. As part of the investigation, law enforcement closed the establishment and planned to execute a search warrant on the premises.
